Preliminary Task Evaluation

What have you learnt from completing this task?

  • Time management
  • How to use blogger
  • The different conventions in a magazine
  • How to be an independent learner
  • How to analyse media texts

How have you used technology?

  • I used a camera to take photographs and an SD card to store my photographs on so then I could upload them to the computer.
  • I used photoshop to construct my magazine front cover by uploading the images I took onto it and adding text.
  • I have used blogger to upload all of my work on.
  • I have  used Microsoft Powerpoint and Publisher to do some of the planning and I saved them as JPEG files so then I could upload them to my Blogger as images

What conventions have you used and why?
The conventions I have used are:

  • Masthead- To let my audience know the name of the college magazine
  • Main Feature- The main attraction of my college magazine.
  • Main Image- To show who the subject of my main feature is to the audience.
  • Pull Quote- To leave the audience asking questions as to what main feature is about so they can buy the magazine and answer their questions.
  • Feature Stories- Other attractions for  my college magazine
  • Plug- To show where special offers are
  • Skyline- To let the audience know that this is my first college magazine issue
  • Footer- To tease the audience of what else the  magazine has to offer.
  • Date- To let the audience know how recent the stories are in the magazine
  • Price- To let the audience know how much the magazine will cost

What would you change if you were to do this task again?

  • I would change the layout of the blog to make it more easy to follow and in chronological order.
  • I could add more detail and do more planning and research so I have more ideas to choose from and to make it look like I have thought carefully about everything in my front cover.
  • I could have included more photographs in my magazine or I could have done a two shot of a male student and a female student to make it more neutral.
  • My main image isn't great because I took the photograph in a green room and the lighting that was used shined onto the green screen and green light reflected onto the model's left side. I was unsure of how to change the skin colour on Photoshop, so maybe I could have asked for help.

College Magazine Cover

Mise-en-scene and Location Ideas

My magazine is based on the college, therefore I chose to take some pictures of Wyke College. I took the photographs around midday because that's when the sun is at its peak. There are a few faint patches of clouds in the sky which adds some detail and still gives a warm vibe.
Also where I have chosen to take the photograph, the sun hits perfectly and there is a range of different colours from the grass, bushes and trees; the building; the sky and clouds

Semiotics/LIIAR analysis

Semiotics/LIIAR Analysis

What are semiotics?

Semiotics is the study of symbols and signs and their interpretations.

What is LIIAR?

LIIAR stands for Language, Ideology, Institution, Audience and Representation. These five concepts allow us to understand and study media effectively.

Language

The codes and conventions used in different media to convey messages to the audience which includes, the theme, the content, the purpose, the layout and photography.

Ideology

The attitudes, beliefs and values held in common by a group of people. Ideology allows society to understand the meanings of messages.

Institution

The organisations or companies that are responsible for the production, marketing, distribution or regulation of media texts.

Audience

The people who the media is aimed. The media may contain different aspects of which suit a specific audience and this is referred to as 'target audience'.

Representation

The ways in which the media portrays certain groups, communities, experiences, ideas, or topics from a particular ideological view in images, words or sound.
